Daniel Rudin studies and practices documentary and news as mediating and organizing technologies of the public sphere. His research focuses on the role of the “Left” and “state” including 20th-century documentary film and the New Philippine Cinema. His art practice explores dividing lines between the documentary and the experimental, while his journalistic work has focused on labor issues. After working as a Luce Scholar with the Filipino social news network Rappler, Daniel began a multimedia project to document labor violations and promote communication among Filipino workers. This grew into the NGO “People’s Media Advocacy, Asia” and the “Center for People’s Media,” garnering support from the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts, the UCSC Blum Center, BigIdeas@Berkley, the Union for Canada (UNIFOR), and the Everett Program, among others. Daniel currently lectures on video production, documentary, Asian cinema, and film theory and history at the University of California, Merced.
